Music and Drama Curriculum
Curriculum Overview
From Foundation, the Performing Arts program aims to introduce students to the joy of music and performance through engaging, hands-on experiences. With a focus on participation and enjoyment, they will experience different elements of the performing arts through singing, instrument play, and fun musical activities.
The Performing Arts curriculum for Foundation Students will cover:
- Counting, repeating and performing basic rhythm patterns.
- Using a variety of untuned and tuned percussion instruments to explore sounds, accompany storytelling and play along to a beat or song.
- Exploring key musical elements such as beat, rhythm, pitch, dynamics and tempo.
- Creating basic dance moves and simple role plays.
This continues in the Performing Arts curriculum for Year 1 and 2 Students which will cover:
- Learning to read, perform and compose basic rhythm with notes of different durations.
- Matching rhythms and melodies to songs and exploring musical elements such as dynamics, tempo and pitch.
- Using a variety of untuned and tuned percussion instruments to explore sounds, accompany storytelling and play along to a beat or song.
- Responding to music and describing how different elements have been used to create moods or effects.
- Creating and performing basic dance routines and drama performances.
In Year 3 and 4, students will cover:
- Learning and performing more complex rhythm patterns and different musical styles.
- Using known songs to explore the musical elements of rhythm, beat, melody and harmony.
- Using instruments to explore and highlight different musical elements.
- Utilising digital audio programs to compose and perform music.
- Responding to music and describing how different elements have been used to create moods or effects.
- Creating and performing basic dance routines and drama performances.
Finally in Year 5 and 6, the Performing Arts curriculum will cover:
- developing their aural abilities through various exercises, songs and programs.
- playing tuned and untuned instruments to explore improvisation and composition.
- playing together in small ensembles and groups.
- utilising computer programs and websites to compose their own music.
- Responding to music and describing how different elements have been used to create moods or effects.
