Science

Every student at Vermont Primary School participates in fortnightly Science lessons.

The four areas of Science are taught annually to all students:

  • Biological Sciences
  • Chemical Sciences
  • Physical Sciences
  • Earth and Space Sciences

Primary Connections Science is one of the resources we use for our lessons.

Individual Science lessons are structured around the Launch, Inquire and Act model.

This model has 3 phases and outlines the process used when inquiring and investigating. It is particularly important when identifying the prior knowledge of students and building upon this knowledge.

  • Launch phase: captures interest and elicits prior knowledge of students (without correcting misconceptions)
  • Inquire phase: provides students with hands-on experience of phenomenon and allows the students to pose questions and investigate answers to those questions
  • Act phase: allows the students to apply their learning in new contexts relevant to today’s world. Also to communicate, evaluate and reflect on their learning.

We provide students opportunities to develop understandings of important science concepts and processes through a variety of investigations and hands-on experiments. We endeavour to link science learning to students’ everyday lives to foster a love of science and inspiration to follow future careers in the STEM fields.
